Expensive haircut in Copenhagen: what you are actually paying for

A women's haircut in Copenhagen can cost a couple of hundred kroner or well over a thousand, and from the outside it is not obvious why. Nobody explains the difference, so the higher price can feel like a brand markup. Usually it is not. Here is what changes at the top of the range, and how to judge whether it was worth it.

Why the price range is so wide

Two things drive it, and neither is the shampoo.

The first is time. A quick trim is twenty minutes. A cut planned around how your hair grows, where it parts, where it is thick and where it is fine, is not. You cannot compress that, and the salon has to charge for the chair.

The second is what the cut is designed to do. A shape can be cut so that it looks its best on the day, straightened and finished by someone else. Or it can be cut so that it works when you wash it yourself on a Tuesday morning and let it dry. Those are different jobs, and the second one is harder.

What changes at the higher end

• The cut is built for your hair, not for a picture. Thick hair needs weight removed in particular places. Fine hair needs weight kept. The same shape on two different heads needs two different cuts.
• It is cut for movement. Layers placed so the hair falls, swings and settles by itself. This is the whole idea behind the Italian approach: you should be able to wash, dry and leave, without tools and without ten minutes of arranging.
• It grows out well. A good cut keeps its shape for months instead of collapsing after five weeks. That changes the real cost per month more than the price on the day does.
• Someone tells you the truth. If the cut you have brought a photo of will not work with your hair, you want to hear that before it is cut, not after.

The point of a good haircut is not how it looks when you leave the salon. It is how it looks on the mornings you do nothing to it.

How to tell afterwards whether it was worth the money

Not on the day. Everyone's hair looks good walking out of a salon. Judge it on three things instead:

• The first wash at home. Does the shape come back on its own, or does it need rescuing?
• Week four. Is it still recognisably the same cut, or has it lost its edges?
• The growing-out. A cut designed properly gets softer as it grows. A cut done quickly gets shapeless.

How much does a haircut cost in Copenhagen, and what do we charge?

An Italian layered haircut is from 1,450 DKK, including wash and blow-dry, and takes about 1.5 hours. That is at the higher end for Copenhagen and we would rather say so plainly than pretend otherwise. The time is the reason.

When a cheaper haircut is the sensible choice

Honestly: often. If your hair is straight and simple, you wear it long and one length, and you want a few centimetres taken off, you do not need to spend this. The same goes for a fringe trim between appointments.

Where the extra time earns its money is hair that is thick, very fine, curly, growing out from a cut you regret, or that you have simply never managed to make behave. That is the hair where a proper cut changes your mornings rather than just your afternoon.
